Allyson

I’m not sure it’s good timing, but Hayley and I have to head back to California for a few days in order for Hayley to turn in some of her schoolwork and for me to check in on the patients I’d had before we left. And maybe a break wouldn’t be the worst thing. Get our priorities straight again.

When we get to the airport, we spot Tanner sitting there, looking blankly out at the planes taking off.

“Tanner? What are you doing here? Is everything okay?”

Tanner’s expression doesn’t change. He barely acknowledges me there at all. “Zander fired me,” he says in a monotone voice.

“What the fuck?” I breathe. “There’s no way. He needs you way too much.”

He slowly brings his gaze to mine, and I see the red rings around his eyes and the running nose. “Jesse stole prescription drugs from me. I believe Hayley here told Zander that she had seen Jesse with them. Zander confronted Jesse, Jesse told him I had given him Adderall to help him focus during the race, and we could get the sponsorship. Zander threw me out without even a hint of hesitation.” He looks back out the window. “We’re family until we’re not, right?”

I turn to look at Hayley. “Is this true?”

“My involvement, yes. I saw Jesse had them. I told Zander. I didn’t think it would ever be assumed that Tanner would take the fall for it. It was obviously Jesse.”

I gesture to Tanner. “Get up. We’ll go back and get it sorted. You just need to explain that—”

“No,” Tanner said flatly. “He wants me gone, I’m gone.”

Our flight gets called, and Tanner numbly gets up and walks on, not looking back.

I share a glance with Hayley and we’re both thinking the same thing.

How the hell did this all get so complicated?
